Description

Native to the Pacific regions of Costa Rica and Panama, the sub-adult /adult Costa Rican Zebra Tarantula, scientifically referred to as Aphonopelma seemanni, is a unique & beautiful species of tarantula. Often referred to as the Costa Rican Striped-Knee or the Stripe Knee Tarantula, this species is known for the striking striped pattern adorning its legs. These alternating bands of black and cream are responsible for its colloquial name and give it a distinctive look among tarantulas. Sub adult / adult Costa Rican Zebra Tarantulas are covered by a rich dark brown or black exoskeleton, with the colors extending across its abdomen and cephalothorax – the fused head and thorax. Comparatively medium-sized, mature female specimens typically exhibit a leg span of approximately 5 to 6 inches (12 to 15 centimetres). Males, on the other hand, tend to be a bit smaller. Hailing from regions of moderate to high humidity, Aphonopelma seemanni thrive best in an enclosure with a humidity level between 60-70%. This desired environment can be achieved by gently misting the enclosure periodically using a spray bottle, helping to replicate the moist atmosphere of their native habitat. To monitor the habitat’s conditions effectively, a hygrometer in the enclosure is recommended. This device can track humidity levels, ensuring they stay within an optimal range. Furthermore, including a water dish or maintaining a moist substrate can be beneficial in sustaining appropriate humidity levels. The Costa Rican Zebra Tarantula is primarily terrestrial, spending the majority of its life on the ground. In their native environment, these tarantulas are known to inhabit burrows, thus requiring ample substrate in their enclosure to exhibit this natural behaviour. Providing sufficient depth of substrate not only helps in maintaining humidity but also gives your tarantula an opportunity to engage in instinctive burrowing behaviours, creating a more enriching and naturalistic environment.
