Description

Achatina fulica, commonly known as the Giant African Land Snail, is a snail native to East Africa. It is one of the largest land snail species, capable of reaching lengths of up to 7 inches (18 cm) and weighing about 32 grams. This species is highly adaptable and has been introduced to various regions worldwide, where it is considered an invasive species. The albino Jadatzi morph is a specific variation of the Giant African Land Snail, known for its unique shell colouration. It has a stunning golden yellow shell with contrasting pale bands or stripes. Snail enthusiasts and collectors highly seek out this morph due to its striking appearance. The giant African land snail has a relatively long lifespan for invertebrates, with an average of 5 to 10 years. In some cases, they have been known to live up to 15 years or more in captivity. These snails mature within a year, and are sold when typically a couple of months old as young ‘snaillings’. Achatina fulica is a hermaphroditic species, meaning each snail possesses both male and female reproductive organs. However, they still require a mate to reproduce. After mating, the snails lay clusters of small, round eggs in moist soil or substrates. Achatina fulica is a gentle animal that is safe to handle. They require a moist enclosure filled with substrate and a sheltered place such as a piece of cork bark for them to hide in. GALs (Giant African land snails) are omnivorous but eat primarily vegetables & fruits. This should be substituted with a source of protein such as dried insects, and a source of calcium to keep their shell strong and healthy. Overall, we highly recommend these unconventional, low-maintenance pets to experienced invertebrate keepers and beginners alike.
